5. Naturally Insulating

Timber is a naturally insulating building material with relatively low thermal conductivity. It transfers heat more slowly than highly conductive materials such as steel, and can support more comfortable and energy-efficient building envelopes.

When timber framing is combined with correctly specified insulation, it can help limit unwanted heat gains in summer and heat losses in winter. This may reduce demand for mechanical heating and cooling while supporting more stable indoor temperatures throughout the year.

Timber framing can also reduce thermal bridging through the structural frame compared with more conductive framing systems. However, framing alone does not determine a building’s thermal performance: insulation continuity, glazing, airtightness, orientation, shading and ventilation are also important.

Its principal thermal benefit is its resistance to heat flow; the best results are achieved when timber framing forms part of a carefully designed, code-compliant building envelope with suitable insulation and moisture management.
